Well since I became moderator, I have deleted about 8 messages, which seems to be more than what I would usually see before they were deleted. And I have noticed my web page guestbook gets about 2 spam posts a day now, as opposed to 1 a week just about a week ago.

Has anyone else noticed the increase in net spam lately? My email hasnt gotten any more than usual, but I doubt it could get much worse than it already is.

Phew - you're at last faster than me - I think I've deleted only 2 recently.

I removed a spam yesterday, and just now deleted the user xxx-forum. I don't know that spam is increasing, though.

Ooop, spoke too soon. I just deleted another guest spam. :?

I just deleted two more. I guess that is what I get for saying anything.

I took out five spams that appeared while I was writing a post. Ironically, one was an advertisement for a service that spams forums...

Forum spammers seem to be quite active recently. I've deleted a lot of messages today and yesterday.

Same here. I also removed two or three "members" from the forum.

From a recent spam (that I've removed), about forum spamming:
some spammer wrote:3. Forum spam.
Opportunities of posting:
- Registration at a forum with editing a profile of the user
- Dispatch on the forums supporting a guest input
- Notices on e-mail about answers at a forum or private messages
- the Opportunity of registration without posting (increases PR Google)

It's the Opportunity of registration without posting (increases PR Google) that caught my attention, because there are many users registered who never post anything.
So far I only deleted users where the username, email-address or web-link were highly suspicious. Seems that I should be more rigurous and delete all users with no posts - what do you think?

I've struggled with the same question. I took two spambot postings off this forum last night, and also removed two registered users. There was a third that I was iffy on, so I let it stay.

But I agree - why would someone sign up to a forum and then not post? There aren't really any other features that are missing if you don't register. (Well, perhaps this forum lets you watch threads?)

It might create a minor inconvenience for registered users to find themselves having to re-register, but I doubt it'll cause any real harm. Just make sure to post something in the forum so people understand those are the rules.

Well, I know that there are at least two real users who have never posted a single message: I know Troya and Trulayne from the IMP forum.

I can only guess that the reason is to be able to spot unread messages quickly - this feature doesn't work for unregistered users.

I'll update the forum rules and post a message, so registered users get the chance to post some proof that they're no bots :)
I'll then delete every new user who hasn't posted anything a week after registration.

Count how many non-registered posts are bots, and the few that are not. The ones that arent are registered users who forgot to log in.

Just something to think about....

:(

You're probably right. Spam amouts have exploded last week - I guess by now all spammers know that this forum is open for guests.

Let's see if the spam level stays that high (we could count the messages we delete) - if yes, I'll consider disallowing guest users again.

I didn't count them, but I think I deleted about 5 messages each day too.
Im on the IMP forum as well, and they too have seen a lot of spam recentrly (although they're running a different forum software).

What's your opinion, shall I disallow guest posts again?
