Forum Visitors - Bots or Humans?

Postby dcuny » Fri Jan 13, 2006 4:40 am

I noticed that some of the Views values in the Development forum have been getting a lot of hits. For example, the Timeline thread shows 240 hits, while the New Version thread shows 396 hits. Raytracer? shows 7992 hits, although I suspect that's mostly from me admiring my work. ;)

I'm curious as to whether these are web spiders or actual people visiting the site. :?

Well, Raytracer is quite a buzzword :)
Google still seems to not index the forum :? I've got no idea why. I have no robots.txt file and there are no robots meta-tags that would disallow following or indexing. Long story short - I don't know if spiders are browsing the forum - but if they do, I'm sure they browse the whole forum and have no particular interest in raytracing

Google's not all too happy about indexing dynamic pages, IIRC. That's why so many people use URL rewriting modules to fake static URLs.

Don't you have access to your hoster's log files?

Yes, but it's quite limited.
They say that they have load-balancers in place, and it's difficult to synchronize the logs of all apache servers (which is a bit strange, as apache can easily log into a database, so there shouldn't be a problem if requests are handled by multiple webservers) - anyway, the statistics they provide are quite limited and I can't track down which pages were viewed by spiders :?

About Google: I've read about Google sitemaps, but never had time to try it out...

I noticed that the Sunflow topic is now bumped to 317 reads. My guess is that a lot of these hits are coming from bots, which are scanning the topics at the top of the threads, in hopes of being able to post spam anonymously.

Either that, or there's a lot of interest in Java-based global illumination renderers! ;)

I get about 5 to 10 spam mails per day on my email address at jpatch.com - the numbers started to explode a few weeks ago...
But I did not delete a single forum message the last weeks - either you're really fast, or the spam activity in the forum is quite low.

Anonymous posts are allowed now - it would be a good thing if the phpbb developers would add that turing-test (from the user registration page, where you have to enter that hard-to-read text or number) to the anonymous posts form too.

Is anyone else catching a bot calling itself leggera2? I have deleted messages from this beast three times in the last two weeks. 2 of them were yesterday.

I haven't seen it yet, but if it appears again please write down its IP address so I can block it.

I deleted a Guest spam this morning. I haven't been seeing too many of those.

I Googled AlexCoppas, and it's a spambot, so I deleted the post.

My guess is that it's a flag - it could later read the message and know what method could be used to spam the forum.

We are definitely getting hit harder. I have deleted 2 different posts within the space of just a few hours.
