JPatch silently fails on loading

Postby dcuny » Fri Jan 12, 2007 6:32 pm

One problem I've had bouncing my animation between various machines is that JPatch will silently fail during a load, so I won't be able to see what's wrong with the file.

For example, both of my Moai models refuse to load under the precompiled 0.5.2.cvs version of JPatch. No errors are issued, I simply end up with a partially loaded model (i.e.: the materials appear in the tree, but no model is displayed). When I try to load the same model from the version of JPatch running under Eclipse, it loads properly.

When I ran into this problem yesterday, it turned out that I had left the reference to the Rotoscope image in the model. When I deleted it from the file, it loaded properly.

Rather than failing silently, it would be helpful if JPatch issued a warning. It would also be nice if JPatch could [i]try[i] to load a file, even if there are minor issues with it. For example, the missing Rotoscope shouldn't probably be fatal.

Agreed. I've already re-written the entire XML import and export code. I'll have to modify it again (to support the SDS models), and I'll try to make it more user friendly this time.

If you use the current 0.5.x versions, please start it from a shell (or DOS-box on windows), JPatch will dump all error messages to the console.

I forgot to mention that you must start it with java not javaw (otherwise it won't output anything to the console).
If it doesn't work, could you send me the file in question via email to sascha AT jpatch DOT com, with the email subject set to JPatch (otherwise it will be lost in the spam flood)?
Thanks!

how are you starting jpatch?

Are you starting it by clicking on the .jar file or from the command line?

If you are starting from the command line, you should be using a command like:
Code: Select all
java -Xmx512m -jar jpatch0.5.2.jar

Hi Papa Lazarou,
I've got your email with the stacktrace and I think I know what's going wrong. My problem is that there are dozens of 0.5.x versions, each one with different problems, so I'm not sure which version you are using and which one to fix. Which is the exact version you are using - do you know the location where you downloaded it?
If not, can you send me your jpatch .jar file, I could try to fix it directly and upload the fixed version to the server.
Thanks.

Yes, sorry! I was unable to check-out the original sourcecode, but I can use the decompiler to get the source of the class in question directly from the jar file and fix the problem there. I'll upload a bugfixed version tomorrow.
