Postby guest » Tue May 30, 2006 9:00 am

just tried to post this as zmemw16 and got user name already taken

trying to change views on my laptop is a real pain.

so I thought nice new clean install on debian testing - crash
ok try opensuse, painful experience for extras, crash
ok try fedora core 5 + howto, crash

just tried on my laptop, debian testing, the java was installed with dpkg and the java howto -
java version "1.5.0-rc"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0-rc-b63)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0-rc-b63, mixed mode)

and its ready to go - about shows 0.5.2 cvs
file is jpatch_20060527.jar

this is from the fedora core 5 install

uname -a -> Linux xeon.lan.uk 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5smp #1 SMP

stephen@xeon:~$ java -Xms750M -Xmx750M -jar jpatch_20060527.jar

just tried to post this as zmemw16 and got user name already taken

If you've forgot your password, there's "forgot password" option that sends a new password to you. If the email address isn't valid anymore just let me know, I can change your password if you like.

ava version "1.5.0-rc"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0-rc-b63)

This is an obsolate beta version of Java 1.5.0 (the official 1.5.0 version was released years ago!). From the output, it seems to have problems loading png images (the icons). Please install the latest 1.5.0 JRE (I think it's 1.5.0_07), you can download it from http://java.sun.com

the old version of java is on my laptop (512M) and works at least to loading and playing with a model. I'm modelling the envelope of my feet on the pedals, to aid in making a fairing for my recumbent.

i was trying to install jpatch on another machine to avoid the problem
with getting to the numpad keys on the laptop.

it was only when using the latest jpatch devel file that i had a problem
on a clean install of FC5 with latest jdk. same command line on both machines btw.

i posted the error log as well as the output of java -version for the FC5 install. (dual xeon with 2Gb ram)

i pulled the latest sun sdk yesterday whilst doing the fc5 install

i'm on holiday this week:-)

in the meantime, i'll redo the fc5 install, as a minimal one and then
put java sdk on it and then try jpatch
any thoughts please?

The latest version has a keybinding editor (available via the main-menu: File -> Settings).

As for the JVM problems - I don't know. While I can't rule out a problem within JPatch, a crashing JVM is for sure a problem with the JVM.
Please uninstall the GNU version of Java (or at least make sure they don't interfere with the Sun JRE), install a recent 1.5 JRE and try it again. If it doesn't work, you could try posting the problem to the Java forum (on http://java.sun.com).

One thing that's odd is that it seems to be using the server VM, whilst it should use the client VM.

Anybody else having these problems?

success and minor niggles

Postby Guest » Fri Jun 02, 2006 10:38 am

you'll no doubt be pleased to hear, that a netinstall of debian etch along with the latest sdk from sun is working. ie it opens all the way to the main drawing window.

jdk-1.5.0-07 on a linux 2.6.15-1-486 kernel, 1280x1024 screen
(methinks a kernel upgrade/recomp and nvidia drivers are in the wind)

Not actually done anything more.

ISTR a long time ago, muttering about a blue line in the initial display from the origin to top left corner and now its re-appeared;

the screen is divided into 4, with centered horiz and vert lines, no sub-divisioning.

click or scroll with mouse, in the window and the central grid lines hor and vert are now heavier width, with 5.2 boxes above/below and 6.6 left/right horizontally, each box is a 5x5grid with lighter lines and no blue line.

Was a reason for it ever found? scaling not initialised in some way?
hope description helps

just noticed the 'q' in the quit menu option isn't capitalized?
all other entries in the File drop down are capitalized and then on the other drop downs nothing is capitalized?
oops Look and Feel is

also 'install jogl' fails as user, maybe root password request and then do it or a win type 'please see your local system admin' msg.
nice to note it got the install dir correct though.

Ok. I'm actually doing all the development on ubuntu, so I was rather surprised to hear that it didn't work on debian. Glad to hear it does though :-)

ISTR a long time ago, muttering about a blue line in the initial display from the origin to top left corner and now its re-appeared;

Yes, I still didn't fix that. It seems that it starts drawing the first frame before everything is initialized - I'm gonna fix this, but I consider it a minor bug.

I've fixed the menues some time ago. Are you sure you're using the latest snapshot? It's http://jpatch.com/temp/jpatch_20060527.jar
(it is a development version, so all the usual warnings apply!)

also 'install jogl' fails as user, maybe root password request

It suggests directories that are in the library path. It's possible that you need root/Administrator permissions to write into those directories. I don't think that it's possible to switch the user from within a Java app, so either start it as root to perform the JOGL installation, or add a directory you've write access to the java.library.path (-D option) everytime you start JPatch.

so either start it as root to perform the JOGL installation

This is what I ended up doing on Suse 10.0
