Got rid of a couple more. I'm really tempted to turn off the "New Member" option until Sascha returns.

That sounds like a good idea. I hate to be responsible for the destruction of the site by spammers.

After removing yet another spambot's messages, I've disabled new users. :|

Aargh, these stupid spam-bots become quite annoying.
I thought I configured e-mail registration (where new users get a registration email and have to click on the link before they actually can post).
I'll check this, but a sophisticated spam-bot is maybe able to read mails and follow links anyway.
The last option is moderated registration, where a forum moderator has to manually activate new user accounts. I'd rather avoid that, because if someone would like to quickly post to some forum thread, going through the registration process is annoying enough - if he had to wait a day or so before someone would actually activate his account this will drive many potentially interested people away.

But driving away the forum regulars with spam is even worse, so I guess it's the only option...

Put two links in the e-mail:

"If you are an automated registration script, please follow this link: (URL to block registration)

If you are a live human being, please follow this link: (URL for real confirmation)"

Now someone could reprogram the bot, but then again maybe this will work.

That's a good idea, but it would still require writing some php code to delete the users from the phpBB database when they click on the wrong link - which means testing with every new version of phpBB, etc.

I'm a bit disappointed that the phpBB folks don't manage it to add a decent CAPTCHA solution to, I quote, "the most widely used Open Source forum solution", especially since such solutions are freely available (I've used reCpatcha on another site I manage, and so far it was absolutely bullet proof - which sounds quite logical, since the use images that per definition can't be recognized by OCR.)

If the CAPTCHA plugin did it's job, I could even turn on anonymous posts again.

It's a pity, because otherwise I really like phpBB - since version 3 it's got everything I need, is easy to use, and has a nice look and feel - but the security problems are quite annoying, and I also don't like to use plugins (let alone write them myself), because you have to re-install them (which means manually editing the sourcecode) after every update.
